One of the most e-mailed topics that I receive is on craft names. There is often confusion and excitement all mixed together. People want to know . . . what exactly is a craft name? Do you have to have one? How do you get one?
Okay, let’s start from the beginning. A craft name is a name with special meaning that a practitioner decides to use in their Wiccan practice. This craft name or magical name can have several purposes within the practice. A person who recently decided to become Wiccan may take a craft name to help signify a transition from everyday life to a more spiritual directed life. A craft name can be used to help connect with the Goddess and God. It can be a name that helps you feel more centered and fulfilled. A craft name can help you get into the frame of mind for magick. A craft name used on the internet can help you remain anonymous.
As you can see, there are multiple reasons a person may want to take on a craft name. I use the word may because a craft name is optional. You don't have to use one if you don't want to! But, I think many people are drawn to the concept of craft names. Often there is a sense that ones birth name doesn't exactly fit. So having the opportunity to select a name for yourself is exciting.
But . . . how do you find a craft name? Right. Good question. It’s a mixture between choosing one and finding one. First you open your mind and heart. You send out vibes to the universe and let her know that you’re seeking a craft name. Some people start to get a feeling for their craft name, through dreams, tarot readings, intuition or deep mediation.
You can also actively seek out a name by making a list of things you like then putting together various combinations. For example: Butterfly Moonbeam, Raven Silverlight, Rose Tiger, Violet Sun.
Whatever you decide upon (or comes to you) it may take time to get used to. But enjoy your new craft name, write it in your Book of Shadows, engrave it on your magick wand, and speak it during rituals.
